The Index of Industrial Production is published monthly by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and measures the volume of output in mining and manufacturing. With the 2020 average set to 100, it shows how production of automobiles, electronic parts, machinery, chemicals, steel and more has risen or fallen. Because corporate production responds quickly to the business cycle, the index is watched as an early check on the direction of the economy. This page uses the seasonally adjusted series and shows it alongside moving averages and year-on-year change.
